After nearly five decades in executive recruiting, Miller leaves a legacy of industry relationships, mentorship and a commitment to helping people succeed as the firm continues under the leadership of his son, President Travis Miller.
NAPERVILLE, Ill., Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Miller Resource Group (MRG), an executive search and recruiting firm specializing in industrial technology and food and beverage, announces the retirement of former owner and CEO Gary Miller after nearly five decades in the recruiting industry. Effective Oct. 21, his retirement marks the conclusion of a career that influenced thousands of professionals, helped businesses build stronger teams and shaped generations of recruiters.
The announcement also marks the completion of a planned leadership transition. Gary's son, Travis Miller, who became president in 2023, has already assumed full operational responsibility for the firm. Gary has served in a consulting capacity during the transition, helping prepare the company for its next chapter.
Gary's recruiting career began in 1977 with an unexpected opportunity at Sales Consultants of Oak Brook. After walking into the office looking for work, he was offered a one-week trial earning $2 an hour against commission. He returned the following Monday and began a career that would span nearly 50 years.
In January 1986, Gary purchased the business, which later became Miller Resource Group. Under his leadership, the firm grew alongside the factory automation industry, building lasting relationships with employers and professionals in industrial markets. Over the decades, Gary personally interviewed tens of thousands of individuals, while the firm completed thousands of placements and collected feedback from more than 100,000 interviews.
His contributions to the recruiting profession earned him the Alan R. Schonberg Person of the Year Award in 1997 and the 2015 MRINetwork Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing a career distinguished by business accomplishments, mentorship and service to the industry. Yet Gary has never viewed his career solely in terms of placements or business growth. For him, the greatest rewards have come from the relationships formed and the opportunities to help others succeed.
"When I look back, I don't think about my career as one big accomplishment. I think about all the people who were part of it," said Gary Miller. "The clients who trusted us, the candidates who took chances on new opportunities and the people who built their careers alongside us all helped make Miller Resource Group what it is today. I'm grateful for every one of them, and I'm especially proud to see Travis and the team carrying the business forward."
Throughout his career, Gary became known for recognizing abilities in people that they sometimes failed to recognize in themselves. His approach to recruiting extended beyond matching qualifications to job descriptions, focusing instead on understanding individual aspirations, building trust and helping people recognize new opportunities.
That philosophy also shaped his approach to mentoring recruiters and developing the next generation of industry professionals.
"My father taught us that great recruiting starts with understanding people," said Travis Miller, president of Miller Resource Group. "He has an extraordinary ability to see what someone can become and help them believe in that possibility. His greatest legacy isn't just the company he built or the positions he helped fill. It's the countless people whose careers and lives are different because he took the time to invest in them."
With Travis directing operations, Miller Resource Group continues to serve industrial technology and food and beverage companies, recruiting leaders and specialized professionals who support business growth and changing workforce needs.
"The industries we serve and the ways we recruit will continue to change, but the principles Gary established will remain at the center of our work," Travis added. "We're committed to building on that foundation, maintaining the relationships that have sustained this company and continuing to help people and organizations succeed."
Although Gary is retiring from his formal responsibilities, he expects to remain connected to the professional community he has helped build. He plans to continue maintaining relationships, making introductions and offering career advice while spending more time with family, golfing and fishing with his grandchildren.
