Miller, Miller & Canby Accredited by Department of Veterans Affairs; Counsel and Representation for Veterans and Their Families Paves the Way for Benefits
Rockville, MD (PRWEB) November 17, 2014 -- Miller, Miller & Canby has gained accreditation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide counsel and representation to veterans and their families. The firm advises veterans on the levels of financial benefits for which they may qualify and guides them through the often complex regulations and claims process.
Legal guidance is often very beneficial to veterans in preparing claims for benefits, such as pensions. Additionally, an attorney may help with putting together a subsequent plan. “There are many instances where counsel is helpful as veterans and their families establish eligibility and apply for benefits to which they are entitled,” said Helen Whelan, an attorney and CPA in the Estates and Trust and Elder Law practice groups at Miller, Miller & Canby. “It may also be advantageous to move assets into a trust as part of a long-term financial plan.”
VA benefits are generally available to honorably discharged veterans and their families where the veteran has at least 90 days of active duty, with one day during a wartime period, and a permanent or total disability or has attained the age of 65.
Helen Whelan is a principal with Miller, Miller & Canby and, in addition to focusing on veterans benefits, also concentrates her practice in Elder Law, Estate and Tax Planning and Trust & Estate Administration. She is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia and West Virginia and is a CPA with a Masters’ Degree in Taxation.
