St. Lawrence Dentistry offers several dental services in Mississauga, and is licensed by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario to provide sedation dentistry, a welcomed alternative for patients who might fear dental procedures or experience anxiety.

Since 2006 Dr. Hawryluk has worked in conjunction with Board Certified Medical Anesthesiologists to provide comfortable and safe dental care to patients under anaesthesia or sedation. Patients are provided with oxygen and sleep medicine through a breathing mask, and a small intravenous catheter is placed at the back of the hand of adults, or on the foot of children who might fear the sight of needles. The entire procedure is closely supervised with monitors placed on the chest and fingertip to ensure appropriate levels of oxygen, fluids and medication are maintained. During sedation dentistry services patients are completely asleep through the dental procedure, and up to 15-30 minutes thereafter.

Patient preparation for sleep dentistry is similar to other medical procedures; first an assessment is conducted to ensure sedation is not contraindicated due to illness, current medications, or a sensitivity to sedatives. It is required that patients not consume any solid food for 8 hours preceding the sedation, and only minimal liquids (up to 1 cup) can be consumed up to 3 hours before the procedure. Dentists recommended patients wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes so monitoring equipment can easily be applied. It is mandatory that patients confirm that a person will pick them up from the Mississauga dental clinic and drive them home after the procedure, as it is not safe for patients to operate a vehicle for 24 hours following sedation.

There are several advantages to sleep dentistry services in addition to overcoming anxiety about dental procedures. Pain is a major factor preventing individuals from proceeding with necessary dental work, with sedation patients have access to a pain-free alternative and can address dental issues before they exacerbate. Some dental procedures are time consuming and might require several visits to complete. Under sedation, many procedures can be fully completed, and in less time. Sedation dentistry might also be a necessity for patients who have concerns over motor control, such as individuals with Parkinson’s or ADHD who cannot stay immobile for a long period of time. Sedation puts the body in a relaxed state, allowing dentists to complete the procedure without resistance or uncontrolled movements from the patient.

Sedation dentistry is often viewed as a luxury, but is actually an affordable service available to children, adults and seniors. Access to a pain-free alternative is welcomed by many individuals who might otherwise avoid addressing dental issues and let their teeth deteriorate over time. With sedation options, perceived barriers to maintaining dental health are minimized, empowering individuals to actively manage their dental health and wellbeing for the long-term.
