MIT Sloan Introduces "Building Organizational Resilience: A System Approach to Mitigating Risk and Uncertainty"
New course designed to provide business leaders with a practical approach to assess and build organizational resiliency against unexpected, catastrophic events
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The COVID-19 global pandemic has surfaced the critical importance of organizational resilience, but many other major risk management failures, such as the devastating impact of hurricane Katrina on New Orleans and the recent massive cybersecurity breach of Solarwind, all stemmed from lagging response to shock-like unexpected events. Recognizing the need for system level organizational capabilities to manage risk institutions of unexpected crisis, MIT Sloan Executive Education today announced Building Organizational Resilience: A System Approach to Mitigating Risk and Uncertainty, a new course designed to provide business leaders with a practical approach to assess and build organizational resiliency against catastrophic events.
The course, led by John Carrier, Senior Lecturer of System Dynamics, Retsef Levi, the J. Spencer Standish (1945) Professor of Operations Management, and Miho Mahzereeuw, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urbanism, will be held September 27-29 over three days, virtually. A second offering of the course will be held November 29-December 1.
"Organizations – designed for optimal performance – work well under steady-state conditions but are vulnerable to failure when the irregular and unexpected shocks occur," said Levi.
MIT's perspective on mitigating organizational risk and managing uncertainty is rooted in real-world practice, systems thinking, and a focus on the human factors that drive suboptimal events and processes. Through faculty presentations, panel discussions case studies, interactive exercises, and small-group discussions, participants will explore the importance of systems thinking, learn to identify and act on the warning signs of irregular operations, and understand the important roles that continuous improvement and organizational agility play in developing a more resilient organization.
