MobileFortress for Android: Secure Mobile Operating System by Tresys Technology
Columbia, MD (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- Tresys Technology, a leading provider of cyber defense technology and engineering services to our nation’s defense, intelligence and critical infrastructure organizations, has released MobileFortress™ for Android™, a secure mobile operating system for Government and Commercial Enterprise mobile platforms.
Tresys MobileFortress is a secure version of Android designed to mitigate the security risks associated with mobile computing such as spoofing, repackaging and grafted applications, greyware, and rooting. Since 2012, Tresys has worked on a project now known as Security Enhancements for Android (SE for Android™). SE for Android is an Open Source Software (OSS) community project created and led by the NSA. Google™ has enabled the use of SE for Android in v4.3 of the Android operating system. However, the controls are not utilized by default and no security policy is enforced. MobileFortress makes use of these controls and includes other security features that provide administrators the ability to lock down various features of the device, restrict network access and hardware components, and control applications – all in an easy to use and customizable manner.
Tresys MobileFortress allows administrators to specify which applications are placed in select security containers while restricting or granting access to capabilities on the device. Administrators can also require that all traffic from the device must traverse the enterprise’s VPN, or limit which applications can access the VPN (e.g., protecting corporate email). MobileFortress is compatible with Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions like MobileIron, allowing full integration into existing enterprise management environments. Unlike competing solutions, applications do not have to be modified at the binary level to make use of the security controls.
MobileFortress allows security controls to be configured to meet a wide variety of use cases – from government to commercial implementations. It has been designed to target the NSA’s Commercial Security for Classified (CSfC) Mobility Capability Package (MCP) and various Mobility Protection Profiles. And it is also designed for use in industrial control applications, allowing secure use of tablets and other devices for monitoring and control of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) environments.
Bob Stalick, CEO of Tresys Technology, LLC. says, “Our comprehensive, configurable approach to securing mobile platforms, will give organizations in Critical Infrastructure, Government, and the commercial world the ability to securely roll out the benefits of a mobile workplace or replace existing Blackberry infrastructure. Unlike other solutions, MobileFortress includes high assurance security to mitigate the growing threats to Android while delivering more configuration options to administrators… and does so without exorbitant pricing.”
Tresys MobileFortress is available now on popular devices including the Samsung GALAXY™ S3, Samsung GALAXY S4, Samsung GALAXY Note2, Google Nexus 10, and Sony Xperia® ZL. More than 100 additional phones and tablets can be supported per customer requirements. Tresys is partnering with various carriers, device OEMs, and enterprise equipment vendors to distribute Tresys MobileFortress.
