Leading bridge engineering firm to work with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to address functional deficiencies of the century-old bridge
MECHANICSBURG, Pa., March 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Modjeski and Masters, a nationwide leader in the design, inspection, and rehabilitation of all bridge types, including long-span and movable structures, has been selected by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) as the primary design consultant for the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge replacement project.
As part of the MassDOT team, Modjeski and Masters will provide assistance in addressing functional deficiencies, advancing the bridge replacement to the 25% design threshold. Deficiencies addressed will include long opening times that delay vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists; minimal under-bridge clearance; narrow navigational channels; center pier location that increases the potential for vessel impact; and narrow sidewalks.
"We have determined that Modjeski and Masters has the experience, expertise, and skill to start work on the preliminary design and public input phase of this important bridge project, which affects not only the road traffic but the efficient operation of the maritime needs in the Port of New Bedford," said Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver.
The Massachusetts Legislature has approved $100 million in state funding for the bridge's design and replacement, and the preliminary engineering phase is expected by early 2024. Engineering considerations and public input will also help decide if the bridge will be replaced with another swing bridge or a different bridge type.
"We are honored and excited to provide key design recommendations for the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge, helping to ensure its full 75-year lifespan," said Thomas Cole, Project Manager at Modjeski and Masters. "By making some enhancements that will result in shorter wait times and widened pedestrian spaces, we hope to provide a more seamless and enjoyable experience for the thousands of people that travel across it every day."
A navigational channel will be maintained throughout the duration of the project, as full roadway closures and detours will be necessary during construction. Public involvement and feedback are now being collected as part of the initial stages. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
