Momentive to Showcase New Silicone Technologies at K 2019

WATERFORD, N.Y., Aug. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Momentive Performance Materials Inc. ("Momentive"), a global leader in specialty chemicals and materials, will introduce a range of new silicone technologies at K 2019, the industry's largest trade fair for the global plastics and rubber industries.

Momentive will introduce new and innovative silicone solutions including silicone elastomers, specialty silanes and coatings. Live demonstrations will highlight the real-world application of these technologies.

Silicone Elastomers

At K 2019, Momentive will showcase its complete portfolio of Silopren* liquid silicone rubber and other silicone elastomer solutions. The new self-bonding Silopren LSR 27x9 family addresses the rising demands for hard-soft designs, helps to achieve the bonding between silicone and thermoplastics, reduces assembly steps and meets various complex design requirements.

The highlight for our Silicone Elastomers business will be the first presentation of a 2-component molding cell to manufacture an innovative 'butterfly' smartphone-holder prototype. This cell will overmold a plastic frame, based on Covestro's Apec® 1745 polycarbonate, directly in a second shot with the new Silopren LSR 2759 from Momentive. The result will be a smartphone-holder having excellent primer-less adhesion between the PC and Silicone rubber, and ready for attachment to a car´s ventilation flap. With a cycle time of only 40 seconds, visiting spectators can grab a part fresh from the machine.

The entire demo design, set up and implementation will be provided by Elmet, which also built the two-shot mold, automation and LSR dosing system TOP 5000 P. Setup will be implemented on a 2-component injection molding 'SmartPower 120' machine and robot from Wittmann-Battenfeld.

With Momentive's self-bonding LSR, multiple functionality enhancements can now be introduced to an array of new product designs. The new Silopren LSR 27x9 family from Momentive offers primer-less adhesion to many PC, PBT and copolyester substrates in commercial hard-soft combinations.

Specialty Silanes

Momentive's specialty silanes offer key formulated solutions, including TOSPEARL* 120 FL spherical beads, that can provide excellent thermal stability and low surface energy properties, making them excellent candidates to consider for use in BOPP films where slip and anti-block properties are required.

Used primarily with polycarbonate and acrylic resins, Momentive´s TSR 9000 spherical silicone beads are a versatile additive that can help improve optical diffusion of light. Additional benefits include heat stability and a low refractive index.

PEarlene* SiPC MB01 is a silicone gum masterbatch, enhanced with a polycarbonate that is used in the extrusion of plastic copolymers and elastomer formulations. Overall, Momentive's masterbatches offer improved processability, as well as scratch and mar resistance when used in the compounding or extrusion of certain plastics. Momentive's specialty silanes continue to deliver innovative solutions; from crosslinking, adhesion promotion, coupling and dispersion.

Coatings

Momentive's SilFORT* coatings enable plastics and polymers to replace glass and metal in demanding exterior and interior applications, including automotive, architectural and touchscreen displays. SilFORT coatings offer outstanding UV protection and resistance to abrasion, chemicals and solvents, as well as aid to plastics in maintenance of color, gloss and light transmission for long-lasting performance and durability.

SilFORT coatings enable the increased use of plastics for applications requiring design flexibility and weight savings. Momentive's SILFORT AS4700 hardcoat combines outstanding abrasion resistance and extended weathering performance with best-in-class light transmission rates of up to 93%. This new coating is ideal for high transmission applications, such as autonomous driving sensors and LIDAR receivers.
