Moms of Black Boys United, Inc. (M.O.B.B. United) Hosts 2nd Annual Champions of Change Breakfast at 2019 ESSENCE Festival
Honorees include: Phaedra Parks, Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome; Special guests include: Korey Wise, Dr. Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana of the Exonerated Five; Partnership with "BeWoke.Vote" to amplify activism and raise awareness of social issues;
NEW ORLEANS, July 3, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- To commemorate the organization's third anniversary, Moms Of Black Boys United, Inc. (M.O.B.B United) will continue its mission to elevate how Black boys and men are treated in society at the 2019 ESSENCE Festival. M.O.B.B. United will connect with moms and advocates via a variety of touchpoints during the ultimate celebration of black culture anticipated to draw more than half a million attendees, July 5-7, 2019 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The organization will host its 2nd Annual "Champions of Change" Breakfast Saturday, July 6, 2019, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the JW Marriott (614 Canal St) in New Orleans. The fundraiser will be supported by "BeWoke.Vote," a 2019 Webby Awards nominated short-form social series campaign that features one-on-one segments of celebrities discussing political, social and societal landscapes. It's considered a rally for activism and a platform to encourage voter engagement and participation for in which some of the most influential names in the entertainment world have participated including Kim Kardashian, Will.i.am, Jamie Foxx and Chelsea Handler. "BeWoke.Vote" was conceptualized by prominent philanthropist and investor Robert F. Smith, film director Deon Taylor and film producer Roxanne Taylor who are all partners in Hidden Empire Film Group.
"We are so excited to partner with such a dynamic social campaign like "BeWoke.Vote" to elevate our message and galvanize support, not only among moms but among young people of color who can help amplify our voice and mission," said Depelsha McGruder, Founder and President, M.O.B.B. United.
"Champions of Change" honorees include TV Personality, Attorney, Social and Political Activist Phaedra Parks for her work with fatherless boys and her Save Our Sons program; Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome for her demonstrated commitment to responsible government and police accountability; and Monteria Robinson for her tireless quest in demanding justice for her son, Jamarion, who was killed in 2016 by police officers. The event will be emceed by Nicki Micheaux, Notable Actress of "Good Trouble" and M.O.B.B. United Ambassador. Notable invited guests include Yandy Smith, TV Personality and Business Mogul, Roland Martin, Radio Host and Journalist; and Korey Wise, Dr. Yusef Salaam, and Raymond Santana from the Exonerated Five.
McGruder and Vanessa McCullers, M.O.B.B. United executive director, will participate in a discussion around mass incarceration joined by Wise, Salaam and Santana on the ESSENCE Power stage Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 3:55 PM followed by a discussion of the school-to-prison pipeline with businesswomen and mothers Psyche Terry, CEO/Founder, Urban Hydration; Jodyann Pendergast, Essence of a Boss CEO; and Jamila T. Davis, motivational speaker and activist at 4:20 PM.
M.O.B.B. United's "Woke Moms" will also host a booth at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center where Essence Festival visitors can register for a M.O.B.B. United membership to learn how to advocate for their sons and register to vote via BeWoke.Vote Friday, July 5 to Sunday, July 7, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
