Monster Energy congratulates Tom Schaar on taking second place in Men's Skateboard Park in the 2023 World Skateboarding Tour Park San Juan competition in Argentina. In the second official qualifier event for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the 23-year-old from Malibu, California, claimed a podium spot and important ranking points.
From May 21-28, the 2023 World Skateboarding Tour Park San Juan contest attracted 179 skateboarders from across the globe to Pocito Skatepark. Organized by World Skate, the official international governing body for skateboarding in the Olympics, the competition offered $200,000 in prize money and qualifier points for the upcoming Olympic Summer Games.
After a grueling semi-final on Saturday, eight riders earned their chance to compete for the top spot in Sunday's Men's Skateboard Park final. With each rider looking to build the biggest score in one of three 45-second runs, there was no holding back. As broadcast commentator, Chris Pastras said: "You got to throw everything you got!"
Monster Energy's Schaar came to Argentina ready to throw down, fresh off taking the silver medal in Skateboard Vert at X Games Chiba 2023 earlier in May. Facing heat from an A-list roster of competitors, Schaar showed grace under pressure and put together a perfect run to claim his podium spot.
In his second run of the final, Schaar landed a huge alley-oop backside 540 in the deep end, alley-oop backside 270 ollie lipslide over the big hip, frontside Smith grind, transfer to backside tailslide the extension, huge alley-oop 270 backside tailgrab over the hip, frontside 5-0 grind, kickflip Indy fakie the deep end, Half Cab, Caballerial disaster revert, and switch backside disaster for 84.51 points and second place.
Officially returned from an injury that overshadowed his 2022 season, Schaar also podiumed at the Concrete Bowl Jam at Tampa Pro 2023 earlier this year in Florida. Known as the first skateboarder to land a 1080-degree aerial, Schaar owns nine X Games medals (one gold, four silver, and four bronze) and is set to compete at X Games Ventura in July.
