Monster Energy's Curren Caples Wins Gold in Skateboard Park at X Games Austin 2015
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) June 06, 2015 -- The action was off the charts today at X Games Austin 2015 where the energetic crowd witnessed the world’s best park skateboarders at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) go blow-for-blow on the California RampWorks-designed course. When the dust settled, Monster Energy’s Curren Caples walked away with the Gold medal, the second X Games Gold in his career.
At temperatures over 97 degrees Fahrenheit, the high-octane finals were a master class in state-of-the-art park skateboarding. The world’s elite transition skaters charged the 9,000-square-foot course with its multitude of hips, spines, bowl corners, banks, and deep transitions for blasting big airs.
As the action intensified, the finals boiled down to a showdown between Caples and reigning X Games Park champion Pedro Barros, who held on to first place throughout the prelims and large parts of the finals. With everything riding on his 3rd and final run, Caples stacked together a perfect routine pairing stylish airs with difficult technical tricks, covering every angle of the concrete park with speed and signature effortless flow.
Standout moves of Caples winning run included a tweaked backside crossbone air over the deck into the hip, frontside kickflip on the spine, huge frontside tuck-knee air in the deep end, backside lipslide transfer onto the spine, frontside blunt on the pool wall, and a 5-0 transfer to drop off the spine into the quarter pipe, followed by a frontside noseblunt on the bank wall for the highest score of the weekend at 86 points.
The son of former pro surfer Evan Caples, Curren made his X Games debut at the age of 14 in 2010. A highly versatile skateboarder mixing speed and technical tricks with surf-inspired flow, Caples already took home Gold in the Park event at X Games Munich 2013, and Silver in Barcelona that same year.
Having recently won the Hart Lines street skateboarding contest, Caples will also be one of the Monster riders to watch in tomorrow’s X Games Skateboard Street event, when he joins teammates Ishod Wair, Shane O’Neill, Matt Berger, and defending street champion Nyjah Huston.
Also skating strong this weekend, Monster’s Raven edged into 3rd place with long alley-oop 5-0 grinds, huge Indy air transfers over the deck into the spine, backside smith through the pool corner and frontside nosegrinds on the bank wall, but was ultimately bumped to 4th place by Ronnie Sandoval’s final run.
