More Than Human Records Launches Contemporary Electronic Music Label
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- More Than Human Records has launched with two limited edition 12-inch EPs, the first for the new label specializing in contemporary electronic music. The Vancouver-based company has been established by Gareth Moses, a CiTR radio host in the Canadian city.
Moses, who was born in the UK and relocated to Vancouver in the 1990s, is a professional film technician and self-confessed culture obsessive: “I started hosting a radio show on local station CiTR to indulge my love of electronic music, specifically the odder broken-techno stuff from labels like PAN and Blackest Ever Black. I also fell in love with the resurgence of a sort of nostalgic sleeve design aesthetic in labels like Trunk and Ghost Box. So I thought I’d combine the two to create a sort of ‘future-nostalgia’.”
The two launch records, each issued in a limited edition of 300, are Negative Object by The Passenger (MTH001) and Lay Doe by Plays:four (MTH002). Both are four-track, 150gm vinyl EPs, individually numbered and contained in a hot foiled sleeve with wraparound high-gloss UV decal. A download code is also included with each EP.
The Passenger (aka Jesse Creed) uses potent musical alchemy to embrace styles ranging from synth-nerd electronic wizardry to dance-friendly digital jams. “I got to know Jesse’s work when I heard his debut LP last year; it was full of textures and stories and emotion. His music has a narrative aspect to it and Negative Object is like a film of a party in reverse.” Plays: four is a sample-based electronic trio from Vancouver and Lay Doe is their debut EP in which the four tracks explore the tension between the hypnotic value of beats and parallel sound objects. “There seems to be something very interesting happening in Vancouver at the moment. The music is intelligent and experimental; that’s a good reason to try and get this work out. But More Than Human will be releasing artists from all over. The music isn’t geographically localized,” says Moses. Lowermoor (MTH003), by the UK artist Kemper Norton, will be released at the end of August.
To achieve his aim of making More Than Human Records both desirable and collectable, Moses commissioned the internationally renowned Swedish designer Pernicals Bedow to create and oversee all aspects of the label’s design. “The vinyl is housed in sleeves that suggest they are part of some future archive of music, inspired by the classic Smithsonian Folkways model of cataloguing. The conceit is that it’s an archive from the future or alternative world and means it should be fun to get each installment as it comes out.”
