Columbus, OH Personal Injury Attorney Scott Elliot Smith Discusses Ohio Motorcycle Accident
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) August 31, 2013 -- Responding to a news report about a recent accident that left a motorcyclist and his passenger hospitalized, Columbus personal injury attorney Scott Elliot Smith said today it’s important for all drivers to be aware of the smaller vehicles sharing the road.
According to WDTN.com, (“Couple hit by trooper: ‘We forgive you,’” August 18), an Ohio couple sustained non-life threatening injuries after their Harley Davidson motorcycle was struck from behind by an Ohio State Highway Patrolman.
“Due to the smaller size of motorcycles and the fact that riders have very little protection in crashes, motorcyclists are at a much higher risk of suffering injuries in any type of motor vehicle accident,” said Smith, who represents negligence victims and families who lose loved ones in accidents. “While the cause of this accident is still under investigation, it’s likely that tragedy was averted by the motorcycle riders’ decisions to both wear helmets.”
The WDTN news story reports that the couple was on a motorcycle on U.S. 35 in New Jasper Township when an Ohio State Highway Patrolman struck their bike from behind, throwing both riders from their motorcycle.
The couple sustained minor injuries including cuts and bruises. The bike’s operator broke his foot, WDTN stated. While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, the story reports that the injured couple expressed interest in meeting the trooper involved in the accident and has no hard feelings after the accident.
“Often, motorcycle accidents happen when another driver simply fails to see a bike while switching lanes or merging into traffic. In other cases, though, these drivers might be distracted by a text message. They might be using the radio or might even be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said Smith, a motorcycle accident attorney in Columbus, OH. “If another driver’s negligent or careless actions cause a motorcycle rider or his passenger to suffer serious injuries, the motorcyclist could have grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit and collect compensation.”
