GULF SHORES, Ala., Sept. 24, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For the third consecutive year, SH Enterprises Inc. (SHE) has been selected among the top 10 Best Companies to Work for in Alabama by the Best Companies Group, which partners with Business Alabama for the program.
This year marked SHE's fifth time taking home the honor.
SHE is the parent company of Meyer Vacation Rentals, CENTURY 21 Meyer Real Estate, and commercial laundry business Starr Textile Services of Alabama and Louisiana. SHE was recognized in the large business category based on results from employee surveys, interviews, and an extensive application process that shed light on company benefits, camaraderie, employee appreciation and workplace culture.
SHE President Michelle Hodges credited the company's team members for earning the recognition.
"A couple of years ago, one of our team members coined the term '#MeyerInspired,' and it pops up nearly every week in the office as someone describes how a coworker went above and beyond to serve a customer or a coworker. In our business, nothing is more important than our people, and we are blessed to have some of the best."
Hodges said among the team's favorite perks are a health and wellness program called LiveWell, a spring staff celebration, Family Fun Day, and lunches brought in for those working on busy summer Saturdays.
"LiveWell is a program is offered to employees who would like a little extra help, encouragement or accountability when it comes to being their healthiest selves. From meal plans to blood pressure checks, gym membership reimbursement and one-on-one meetings with a health coach, the LiveWell program encourages a healthy lifestyle."
Hodges said the program also encourages employees to participate in annual activities like the Meyer Meltdown in January or midday group walks in May.
The spring celebration invites team members to come together to enjoy refreshments in a festive atmosphere that includes prize drawings such as bonuses, money to be spent playing tourist in their own backyard, and paid days off.
Family Fun Day is held on a Sunday afternoon at a local amusement park and is open to seasonal and regular employees and their families to play games, ride go-carts and enjoy snacks at no cost.
Offering these perks to employees simply makes good sense, Hodges said. "Our organization was built on the principle of team work—working together to achieve the optimum business template for the hospitality industry. Our successes are achieved due to the diverse and talented team of individuals who choose to make it happen for our customers each and every day. Perks, benefit packages and competitive pay are hard earned and well-deserved for each member of our team."
Other benefits include company contributions toward health, life and other insurance, a 401(k) option with a company match, college tuition reimbursement, company-funded scholarships for employees or relatives continuing their education, paid time off for approved non-profit work, and more.
Hodges said these benefits help encourage team members to build careers at SHE. "We want them to finish their workday knowing their contribution matters and is a meaningful part of our organization," she said. "Each team member has a defined job description with goals and objectives and is also encouraged to participate in any number of volunteer opportunities such as Relay for Life; serve on committees with local chambers of commerce; cross-train to learn other roles within the company; and participate in community-led training and leadership development programs."
The perks and benefits are determined based on feedback from the Employee Forum group, which is composed of one team member per department or division. "These team members meet monthly as a group along with the CEO and/or president for a roundtable session discussing company news, changes or departmental needs. This group also solicits, reviews and awards nominations for employee of the quarter," Hodges said.
When asked what advice she would give other companies on cultivating and maintaining a happy workforce, Hodges said, "Engage with your workforce; encourage their feedback on ways to enhance the work environment and remove barriers to help them stay focused on what they can impact. I am extremely proud that SH Enterprises made the list once again for Top 10 Best Companies to Work for in Alabama in the large business category. We are in great company in the state."
