More than 2 million students will take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) during the 2019-2020 school year. More than 1.6 million students will take the ACT test. With the competition for admission into the nation's top schools becoming tougher than ever, a few points can make or break a student's college ambitions. Because of this, the demand for ACT preparation and SAT preparation coaches are very high.
Standardized testing scores are one of the two most important factors in the college admissions process. While a student's GPA is also critically important, it often isn't as reliable an indicator of a student's learning.
Yi Chang, the founder of MY Education Guru (MEG), explains: "There are a lot of factors that influence a student's GPA. Schools often have 'weighted' scores for AP or Honors classes, but each school or district sets their own rules for that. The quality of teachers and resources available to students also matters. With standardized tests, such as the ACT and SAT, there is one set of rules and one set of numbers across the board for every student."
Test prep coaching at MEG includes more than simply drilling students on facts and formulas. A test prep coach's job often starts with helping students choose which tests to take and how often to take them. "It's just not true that colleges prefer one test over the other, but the tests have differences that can help or challenge individual students," Chang says. "In test prep coaching, one of the first things we do is help students choose the test that best suits their learning and test-taking style."
Diagnostic tests help MEG test preparation coaches identify the specific kind of help a student needs. "[Yi] sat and watched each step of the practice test so that he was familiar not only with resulting scores but how my son approached taking the test," says Suzy F, a parent of one MEG student. "Throughout the entire process, Yi was able to customize his instruction and knew just how hard to push."
MEG works with students individually and creates specific plans to help them excel. "Every student has different needs," says Chang. "Some students need help in just one area, others need help across the board."
Whatever the case, improvement by just a few points can make all the difference. "Some universities have hard cut-offs for college admission test requirements, either for total scores or specific subjects so we know our target scores," Chang explains. "In other cases, students just want to improve their college admissions test scores as much as they can without specific numbers in mind."
