If you study the themes driving motivation alongside the tools agencies are using to attract and retain talent today, there's a disconnect.

High caregiver turnover continues to scourge the rapidly growing home care industry, causing headaches and shortages of highly qualified talent to care for our aging population. In a recent study released by myCNAjobs and Illinois based Home Helpers, "Understanding Caregiver Motivations to Increase Retention and Decrease Turnover in HomeCare Agencies", multiple caregiver job attributes are studied to better understand caregiver motivations in an effort to start to reduce the turnover trend.

The research dives into five themes expressed by professional caregivers that led to their overall satisfaction in the workplace including:
-Improved communication and feedback
-Providing tools and training to allow caregivers to do their jobs better
-Recognition of hard work (empathy)
-Team and support
-Better pay

“There's an opportunity to increase retention by listening and responding to core caregiver motivations," says Brandi Kurtyka, Chief Marketing Officer of myCNAjobs. "If you study the themes driving motivation alongside the tools agencies are using to attract and retain talent today, there's a disconnect."

Hiring caregivers and getting them to stick around is one of the single most challenging aspects of running a homecare agency today. With over 50% turnover, a highly competitive caregiver marketplace, and over 10,000 Baby Boomers retiring everyday, attracting and retention conditions are likely to worsen.
