Davis shares, "The author was motivated to write this book when she was driving on the interstate to her place of work. There was a torrent of rain, the sky was dark gray, and visibility was poor. Traffic was almost to a halt. Windshield wipers were whipping to and fro when the author/driver noticed something big in front of her, moving as compared to a snail crawl.
"Something big is in the way, she thought.
"Then she began to imagine her minivan filled with curious toddlers, inquiring of the senses, shouting out the colors they were so familiar with. They were guessing the names of big things they usually see on the road. 'Is it a house?' like the overload trailers that transport mobile homes. Or 'Is it a . . .?' or 'Could it be a . . .?'
"She imagined as the curious minds pondered and wondered. Then visibility returned. The sense used to detect what was in the way was realized, and a new color emerged, a color to add to their vocabulary of colors. What is it? What color is it? And which of the five senses was realized?"
