Hon. Shelley C. Chapman, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge, Southern District of New York
Shelley C. Chapman was sworn in as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York on March 5, 2010. At the time of her appointment, she was a partner in the law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP in the Business Reorganization and Restructuring Department, where her practice included the representation of debtors, creditors, and other parties in interest in major chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings. Prior to her appointment, she served on the Executive Committee of the UJA-Federation of New York’s Bankruptcy and Reorganization Group and on the Advisory Board of the ABI New York City Bankruptcy Conference, and has been active in Cornell University and Harvard Law School alumni affairs. She is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a member of the International Insolvency Institute. She is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, served on an advisory committee of the ABI Commission to Study Chapter 11 Reform, and serves as judicial co-chair of the ABI New York City Bankruptcy Conference. Judge Chapman also is a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and serves on the NCBJ Education Committee. In April of this year, she was appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States to serve as the Chair of the Federal Judicial Center’s Bankruptcy Judge Education Advisory Committee and acts as a mentor judge for the Center’s Orientation Program for Newly Appointed Bankruptcy Judges. She also serves on the Editorial Board of Collier on Bankruptcy as a Contributing Author. Judge Chapman also serves on the Second Circuit Committee on Civic Education and the Second Circuit Program & Planning Committee. She is a frequent lecturer on a variety of U.S. bankruptcy and international insolvency topics at conferences around the country.
Whitman L. Holt, Partner at Klee, Tuchin, Bogdanoff & Stern LLP in Los Angeles, CA
Mr. Holt has represented clients across the bankruptcy spectrum. His work on the side of the debtor or the bankruptcy estate includes representing Fremont General Corporation as a chapter 11 debtor in possession, representing the liquidation trust formed in the Oakwood Homes bankruptcy, representing the chapter 7 trustee of IndyMac Bancorp, Inc., and serving as one of the primary lawyers representing Jefferson County, Alabama in its chapter 9 case. His work on the creditor side includes representing significant debtholders in many of the nation's largest chapter 11 cases. Mr. Holt has significant experience regarding various alternative insolvency regimes, including bank and thrift receiverships under title 12 of the U.S. Code and proceedings for troubled insurers under state law. Mr. Holt is the co-author (with Kenneth N. Klee) of Bankruptcy and the Supreme Court: 1801-2014 (West Academic 2015), which is a comprehensive desk reference for lawyers, judges, law students, and scholars examining the Supreme Court's bankruptcy decisions from 1801 through 2014 from six different perspectives. Mr. Holt also is a contributing author to Collier on Bankruptcy. Mr. Holt is Vice President and a member of the Board of Governors of the Financial Lawyers Conference.
Alan W. Kornberg, Partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP in New York, NY
Chair of the Bankruptcy and Corporate Reorganization Department, Alan Kornberg handles chapter 11 cases, cross-border insolvency matters, out-of-court restructurings, bankruptcy-related acquisitions and insolvency-sensitive transactions and investments. Over the years, Alan has had a significant role in the chapter 11 cases or restructurings of Energy Future Holdings, Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt, Charter Communications, New York Racing Association, Adelphia Communications, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Richard G. Mason has been a partner in the Restructuring and Finance Department of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for over twenty years. Mr. Mason has had leading roles in many of the largest and most complex bankruptcies and out of court restructurings during that time, including Energy Future Holdings, Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), Hawker Beechcraft, Kerzner International, FairPoint Communications, Masonite, Spectrum Brands and Delphi Corporation. He represents bank and bondholder groups, acquirers, distressed investors, boards of directors, private equity sponsors and other significant creditors and shareholders in domestic and international matters. The NBC is a non-profit, non-partisan, self-supporting organization of approximately sixty lawyers, law professors and bankruptcy judges whose primary purpose is to advise Congress on the operation of bankruptcy and related laws and any proposed changes to those laws. The NBC was formed in the 1930’s at the request of Congress to assist in the drafting of major Depression-era bankruptcy law amendments, ultimately resulting in the Chandler Act of 1938. The NBC has been a resource to Congress on every significant piece of bankruptcy legislation since that time.
