Since that first release The Origins Podcast has featured a unique array of famous scientists, celebrities, journalists, musicians and writers in in-depth conversations about not only their own origins, but topics ranging from climate change and space exploration to current challenges with democracy, women's rights, and free speech.
This latest episode brings together two of the most well-known popular scientists in the country, with guest Neil deGrasse Tyson and host Lawrence Krauss. Krauss, rose to public prominence with his bestselling book, The Physics of Star Trek, combined with his vocal effort to combat the teaching of intelligent design in the classroom. His public atheism was highlighted in the film The Unbelievers, which followed Krauss and his colleague, the biologist, author and leading atheist writer Richard Dawkins, around the world as they promoted science and reason. It was further promoted by his New York Times bestselling science book, A Universe from Nothing, which described the modern revolution in cosmology that suggests there is no need for any supernatural intrusions to create an entire universe from nothing. Tyson, astrophysicist, science communicator and renowned director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York, has reached a level of popular celebrity normally reserved for Hollywood stars. His celebrated podcast and television series StarTalk led to his hosting a modern and highly publicized and praised television reboot of Carl Sagan's famous Cosmos series, as well as his book Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, which remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year.
In this episode Tyson and Krauss discuss not only the challenges and opportunities of communicating science to the public, but also how science, like art, can cause people to reassess their place in the cosmos. Tyson reveals the early influences on his own work, and surprisingly points out that few teachers encouraged his excitement about physics and astronomy. The two scientists also discuss and debate such topics as the need for humor and the unexpected in both art and science, and the geopolitical basis of human space exploration.
