Prospective multicenter research finds that a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure using the TenJet device significantly reduced pain and improved function at six months in patients with recalcitrant gluteal tendinopathy.
NORTH BILLERICA, Mass., Sept. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Chronic pain on the outside of the hip can make it difficult to sleep on one side, climb stairs, or sit for long periods. For many patients with gluteal tendinopathy, also known as greater trochanteric pain syndrome, symptoms persist despite conservative care. New research published this month in Cureus reports on the use of an ultrasound-guided procedure with TenJet in patients with recalcitrant gluteal tendinopathy.(1)
The ongoing prospective multicenter study followed 46 patients with long-standing gluteal tendinopathy who had tried at least one conservative treatment before enrolling. Patients underwent a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure in an outpatient setting with the TenJet device. TenJet, developed by HydroCision, Inc. is designed for the targeted, selective removal of degenerative, pathologic tendon tissue while preserving adjacent healthy tissue.
A common problem with few good answers
The condition, known clinically as greater trochanteric pain syndrome, is one of the most frequent causes of hip pain seen in primary care, accounting for an estimated 10 to 20 percent of all hip pain visits.(2) It affects women far more often than men, particularly in middle age and later life.(2) For decades it was assumed to be bursitis, an inflammation problem. It is now understood to be primarily a tendon problem, known as gluteal tendinopathy: the gluteal tendons on the side of the hip gradually break down, with the tendon's collagen becoming disorganized and failing to heal on its own.(3)
That distinction matters because conservative treatments may not fully address the underlying tendon pathology. Research has found that roughly a third of patients still have pain a year after starting treatment, and nearly three in ten are still in pain five years later.(4)
For patients whose symptoms persist, the treatment path can be limited. Many have partial tendon damage and may not be candidates for open surgical repair, yet the pain and functional limitations can remain significant. The study's authors note that there is no clinical consensus on the next step for patients who remain symptomatic after conservative treatment.
What comes next
The published results are an interim six-month analysis from an ongoing study. Patients will continue to be followed for a full two years to evaluate longer-term results. The study did not include a comparison group receiving a different treatment, so it measures patient outcomes after procedure with TenJet rather than comparing the outcomes with alternative treatments.
The research is being conducted across multiple academic centers(5), with patients consenting to study participation before treatment and outcomes collected prospectively rather than retrospectively from patient records. This design provides stronger clinical evidence than smaller, single-center retrospective reports that have made up much of the published evidence in this field to date.
