HILLSBORO, Ore., Oct. 29, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Swinerton completed construction of the 89,000-square-foot Wingspan Event and Conference Center. Recently, the facility started supporting the Washington County Circuit Court to provide justice services in an environment consistent with national and local safety precautions during the pandemic.
The new Wingspan Event and Conference Center complex includes both an exposition hall and a state-of-the-art conference center, complete with a commercial kitchen, concessions, offices, an advanced audio and visual system, and an outdoor exhibit area to better serve the growing capabilities of the Westside Commons, formerly known as the Washington County Fair Complex.
"We are so thrilled with the Wingspan Event and Conference Center," says Venue Manager, Leah Perkins Hagele. "The facility holds so much potential and we're eager to showcase it for the community, once we get past the COVID-19 pandemic and the safety precautions that prevent us from using the building at its full capacity for public events."
"Managing a project of the size and complexity such as the Wingspan Event and Conference Center can be very challenging. What made this project exceptionally rewarding and seemingly effortless to execute is an inclusive environment for participatory team engagement and a can-do attitude to problem solve," said Capital Improvement Project Manager Geoffrey Kavulya. "Moreover, we enjoyed unyielding and firm support from our stakeholders, County leadership and all the fans of Wingspan Event and Conference Center. On behalf of the project delivery team, I say a big thank you for all that you do!"
The project features a glulam and CLT "butterfly roof" structure over steel-framed galleries and circulation areas, designed by LRS Architects and structural engineer IMEG. Swinerton Mass Timber partnered with LRS and IMEG to help with material selection, design coordination, and incorporation of best practices early in design.
Swinerton-constructed mass timber and CLT panels greet visitors in the lobbies, while mega trusses and structural steel make up the structure in the event areas.
"It was exciting for Swinerton to combine our general contracting, mass timber, and drywall expertise in civic construction for Washington County. We hope this beautiful facility is utilized to its full capacity and enjoyed by all in the community. Simply put, this was a great collaborative experience between our client, architect, trade partners, and Swinerton's expert teams; we are eager to partner again on another project with Washington County and LRS," said Swinerton Senior Project Manager John Ciepiela.
Swinerton is currently working on additional public/civic projects in Oregon, which incorporate sustainable mass timber components as well: Chemeketa Community College Agricultural Complex, Oregon State University Cascades Academic Building 2, and Hillsboro Community Center.
