Therefore, it makes sense to focus on optimization now rather than later to ride the wave of that change rather than chase after it.

5 Easy Ways to Increase Voice Search Optimization:

  • Create a FAQ page – The core aspect of voice search is people asking questions and expecting answers. In some cases, it is a very straightforward information exchange such as, "What is the score for the Knicks game?" However other questions are going to be more specific and will be phrased in a natural way of speaking which means finding a natural answer makes the most sense and that is typically what FAQ pages accomplish. The FAQ page should be very detailed and use a conversational tone as if the questions were being answered aloud in person. Each answer should be limited to 30 words at the most and use the active voice. Ideally answers should avoid excessive jargon and be written at a high-school level.
  • Optimize for snippets – Featured snippets are the current pot of gold for search results, both typed and voice. Between paragraph, list, and table types of snippets, there are options for any business to work with. Using structured content and key phrases which a site already ranks highly for are the best ways to getting content featured as a snippet. For those using lists, make sure the H2 and H3 tags are being used which helps crawlers identify the content as a list more easily. Aim to answer 2-3 questions per page with content, and make sure content is concisely written as Google looks for small snippets of under 100 words to quickly and clearly provide the answer its' user is searching for.
  • Claim the Google Business Listing – Often voice search is used to obtain local business information such as location or hours. By claiming the Google Business Listing and keeping it up to date customers can more easily find that business. The listing should include quality photos, key details about the business, links to websites, and be updated whenever anything about the business changes.
  • Expand keywords for SEO – People speak differently than they type. For example, a web search for a new laptop computer might be, "good gaming laptop," while a voice search could be, "What is the best gaming laptop?" The difference is subtle in many cases involving phrasing. There are tools available, such as Answer the Public, which is a site takes search terms and using advanced data analysis will return commonly asked questions related to those search terms. This allows for variations on keywords and phrases that should be considered for SEO as well as a FAQ page to ensure common ways searches of keywords might be phrased are included on the website.
  • Speed optimization – While it is impossible to know the exact level of any individual ranking factor when it comes to SERPs, testing has shown that voice search results load faster than average pages. The logic behind this is that mobile users expect quick results when searching on the go.
