New Book Offers Christian Interpretation of Ancient Indian Mantra
Author K. J. Oommen, MD, FAAN, FAES, announces publication of 'Thamaso Ma Jyothirgamaya'
LUBBOCK, Texas, Aug. 9, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Dr. K. J. Oommen's "Thamaso Ma Jyothirgamaya: A Novel & Unique Christian Perspective" (published by Inspiring Voices) presents a unique interpretation of the most commonly chanted Shanthi mantra from the Upanishads, an ancient compendium of literary works that date back from 1000 BC to 700 BC.
The chant (which translated into English means "Lead me from ignorance to truth, from darkness to light and from death to immortality and thereby to peace") is taken from the Vedic literature, specifically, the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Oommen takes readers through a study of this four-liner from Indian literature, which reveals the yearnings of its ancient sages for truth (sathya) over ignorance (asathya), light (jyothis) over darkness (thamas) and life (amrutham) over death (mruthyu). Oommen analyzes the meaning of the mantra line-by-line, in the literal sense, and then interprets how and when the spiritual plea contained in this sacred chant was granted and fulfilled to the fullest extent by a most unexpected deity.
Oommen hopes readers will see the light and escape from darkness, discover the truth and escape from ignorance, receive everlasting life and escape from eternal damnation and thereby receive transcendental peace (nirvana).
