New England College of Optometry Announces Honorary Degrees & Medal Recipients
New England College of Optometry announces its honorary degree and Presidential Medal recipients for 2019. Recipients will receive their award at the commencement ceremony on May 19, 2019 at Boston Symphony Hall
BOSTON, May 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- New England College of Optometry (NECO) has selected two alumni of the College to receive honorary degrees and one alumnus for the Presidential Medal. Drs. Mitchell Scheiman, Guang-Ji Wang, and Alan Glazier will receive their honors during NECO's 125th Commencement ceremony on May 19, 2019 at Boston Symphony Hall. Each recipient is being honored for their contributions to the field of optometry.
Mitchell Scheiman, OD'75
Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, Erik Weissberg, OD '97 will present Mitchell Scheiman, OD'75, with his honorary degree. Dr. Weissberg notes, "Dr. Scheiman is one of the most impactful researchers in the field of binocular vision. He has positively influenced countless students through his iconic textbooks and fundamentally changed the way we practice through his clinical research on the diagnosis and management of convergence insufficiency."
Dr. Scheiman graduated from New England College of Optometry with a BS and OD degree in 1975 and has contributed continuously to the field. He is currently Director of Graduate Programs, Biomedicine, Dean of Research, and Professor at Salus University/Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Among his many accolades, Dr. Scheiman has been recognized with the 2017 Glen A Frey Award from the AAO (American Academy of Optometry), the 2015 Dr. Jerry P. Davidoff Vision Care Award from the AOA (American Optometric Association), the 2015 Distinguished Resident Alumni Award from SUNY (State University New York), and the Heart of America Contact Lens Society Vision Service Award. His clinical specialties are in the areas of Vision Therapy, Binocular Vision, and Pediatrics.
Guang-Ji Wang, MD, OD'92
President Emeritus Clifford Scott, OD '68, MPH, nominated Guang-Ji Wang, OD'92 for his honorary degree, which was enthusiastically and unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees and will be presented by Drs. Purcell and Yeracaris. Dr. Wang earned his MD degree from Zhejiang Medical University in 1968 and his OD degree from New England College of Optometry in 1992. Before joining the NECO faculty in 1992, he served as an associate professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Wenzhou Medical University in China.
New England College of Optometry has been a partner with Wenzhou Medical University for over 25 years. In addition to a joint MS/OD program between the two institutions, NECO has worked with WMU on education initiatives, leadership programs, and research. Dr. Scott says, "Dr. Wang has been pivotal in developing NECO's relationship with Wenzhou Medical University as well as driving the expansion of optometric education and practice in China throughout the past decades."
Alan Glazier, OD '93
Dr. Alan Glazier will receive the President's Medal from NECO President Howard Purcell, OD '84. After graduating from the College in 1993, Dr. Glazier founded the Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care, one of the largest private optometrist practices in Rockville, Maryland, where he still practices.
Dr. Glazier is being recognized for his work connecting optometrists through the online community he founded on Facebook. His group, ODs on Facebook has grown to include almost 38,000 members around the world. President Purcell notes, "Dr. Glazier has really changed the optometric profession. He has created a platform and environment where eye care providers can communicate about clinical and personal issues. This network has allowed optometrists to feel less isolated and find avenues to support one another in their work from around the world." In addition to his award, Dr. Glazier will present the commencement address.
