New Mac Pro Gets Tense Reception
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 13, 2013 -- Apple's unveiling of the new Mac Pro workstation has garnered media praise—and a new wave of uneasy questions from the designers it's meant to serve. Jason Hennessey of web marketing shop EverSpark Interactive says the Pro will be too pricey for many firms.
The long-awaited Mac Pro boasts an efficient, space-age cylindrical design that packs tremendous speed and computing power into a very small machine, according to Mashable (10.22.2013). That same design also makes expansions and updates difficult, potentially adding substantial expenses on top of its $2,999 price tag.
The Mac Pro has long been the standard for film, music and design work but Hennessey says that a great part of its allure was that users could customize it easily. Designers at EverSpark use Apple products and would be interested to see how the new design works.
“The new Mac Pro has zero internal bays for add-ons,” said Hennessey, whose work at EverSpark includes both video production and web development. “Any external expansions either need to go through USB ports, which the new Pro skimped on, or expensive Thunderbolt adapters.”
At its launch event Apple said that they had tested the Pro with top digital creatives, including one of Lady Gaga's music producers. But Hennessey wonders if they should have let smaller names kick the tires, too.
“The power in this computer is a dream if your company can afford to trick it out,” he said. “But what about a cash-strapped startup, or a mid-size web design firm?”
As an active member in the tech industry, Hennessey says that the customization issues stem partly from the space-saving circular design.
“Saving space is not a priority for most designers,” he said. “A portable workstation is great, but not if I have to give up the ports and options that my old Mac Pro was known for.”
