The new Mako 4500 appliance from Mako Networks streamlines the security, functionality, and cloud management of the Mako System in a cost-effective, smaller footprint that allows for deployment as a secure edge router, secure zone router, or secure wireless access point (WAP). This flexibility makes the Mako 4500 suitable for applications ranging from securing a small home office or IoT product to securing a LAN or wireless segment of a large global network.

The Mako 4500 is fully cloud-managed and can be configured as either a WAP or a router via the Mako Central Management System (CMS). Changes made in the Mako CMS take place in real-time, without the need to visit the site or touch the appliance. Mako 4500 appliances have no moving parts and are industrial-strength units, designed to address the challenging requirements and environments of distributed enterprises.

The simplest use case for the Mako 4500 is as a WAP added to an existing secure network to extend Wi-Fi range. In this case, it would sit behind a router/firewall appliance like the Mako 6600-M. The Mako 4500 features dual‐band wireless on 802.11b/g/n/ac standards and supports up to four wireless SSIDs per appliance.

Small networks that do not require the full feature set of a Mako 6600-M can use the Mako 4500 as a secure edge router. In addition to providing wireless WAN access, the Mako 4500 can be connected to a switch, such as the Mako 1024-SW/P managed switch, to deliver WAN access to a wired LAN, as well.

For large networks, the Mako 4500 can be used as a secure zone router to establish small isolated network segments. As an example, hospital administrators may add a Mako 4500 in the cafeteria to create a public wireless zone for customers and a secure wireless zone exclusively for tablet-based POS devices, with both small zones separated from the large primary network containing secure patient data. The entire Mako System is PCI DSS certified from end to end, providing peace of mind and security for businesses that accept credit cards or handle other sensitive data.

The Mako 4500 is a modest entry point to the powerful features of the Mako System, making it ideal for securely connecting home workers, IoT applications, retail locations, or any small remote sites to head offices, data centers, or third-party applications. Using Mako VPN Cloud, sites connected by Mako appliances can be linked in seconds without requiring static IP addresses. In addition to connecting securely, the Mako 4500 can segment a home office network, separating work devices from personal devices to further reduce risk for the head office network.

Mako VPN Cloud supports circuit, hardware and geographic redundancy, allowing the Mako 4500 to connect to fast, reliable VPNs directly as a router or via another Mako appliance as a WAP.
