New World Medical Launches Kahook Dual Blade
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (PRWEB) October 21, 2015 -- New World Medical (http://www.NewWorldMedical.com), a privately-held ophthalmic device company, announced today that it will be launching the Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) at the upcoming American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Meeting being held from November 13th through November 17th in Las Vegas.
Using precision micromachining and laser-cutting technology, the KDB is engineered to excise trabecular meshwork (TM) tissue through a clear corneal incision as small as 1.2 mm. It features a tip to pierce the TM, a ramp that puts the TM on stretch as the KDB is advanced, and parallel blades that excise the stretched tissue. The heel is also precision engineered with rounded edges intended to avoid damaging the outer wall of the canal of Schlemm as the surgeon advances the KDB.
By excising the TM, the KDB is designed to allow aqueous to drain from the anterior chamber into the canal of Schlemm and distal collector channels. Pre-clinical studies have demonstrated that the KDB leaves smaller leaflets than other widely used ab-interno trabeculotomy techniques. Early clinical data will be presented at New World Medical’s Annual AAO Breakfast Meeting, scheduled for 7AM on Sunday, November 15th at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.
Inventor Dr. Malik Kahook, Professor and the Slater Family Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado stated, "The KDB device will allow surgeons to treat glaucoma patients in combination with cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure to restore function to the natural outflow system of the eye. Removing TM is a procedure that has been present for decades and in many forms. However, the KDB is specifically designed to enhance efficacy of angle procedures by more completely removing diseased TM tissue while minimizing damage to collateral tissues. This is a cost effective way to treat glaucoma in various geographic settings with a short learning curve for surgeons."
The single-use, disposable ophthalmic knife is FDA-registered and will be commercially available throughout the United States on November 16th, with worldwide release planned for early 2016.
