Mr. Nichols is joining this cutting-edge organization as it expands its footprint as a distinctive advisory firm to emerging growth and entrepreneurial middle market companies. Newport LLC, a leading advisory firm, advises emerging growth and middle market companies across the United States through 11 U.S. offices.
Mr. Nichols has been at the forefront of driving innovation and change in the media, communications, music and entertainment, and marketing services industries. Mr. Nichols has been a founder, c-level operating executive, active board member, investor, investment banker and advisor to businesses at various stages of growth and under a wide range of ownership structures.
Mr. Nichols is the cofounder of RightJoin, a data and analytics provider focused on mid-size consumer facing businesses. He is the past CEO of Spin Media, 7x7 Magazine and California Home Design, niche magazines that were restructured as multimedia digital platforms, CFO of Chronicle Publishing Company, a newspaper, cable, TV, and book publishing conglomerate and the co-founder of SFGate, the dominant news and information digital media property covering the San Francisco Bay Area.
Previously Mr. Nichols took Black Entertainment Television public as an investment banker with Credit Suisse First Boston and then joined as CFO.
In addition, Mr. Nichols founded SMAC, an advisory firm focused on digital media transformations and has worked extensively with multiple private equity firms including Golden Gate Capital where he served as an operating partner.
Mr. Nichols, an avid music lover, is a prior board member of Trips For Kids and is a volunteer bass teacher to inner-city middle schoolers through ROCK (Real Options for City Kids) in San Francisco. He has also performed consulting work for NPR Music and SFJAZZ. Mr. Nichols holds an A.B. in History from Stanford and an MBA from Columbia where he received a Samuel Bronfman Fellowship.
