Looking back on the business and remembering how we began is an important part of guiding NAPCO into the future

North American Polymer Company, Ltd., (NAPCO) is celebrating its 40th year in the refinishing business. Established in 1979, NAPCO has grown from being a small bathtub refinishing supply company to now successfully serving refinishing companies around the globe. NAPCO’s founder, Frank Miori, began his work in the refinishing business as a franchisee for a local bathtub refinishing company. During this time, Miori discovered that many refinishers were hungry for this kind of work but knew franchise ownership wasn’t very appealing. He developed a business concept to make bathtub refinishing products available to all professional refinishers willing to learn and do a little hard work. Shortly after that, NAPCO launched onto the scene and became the very first bathtub refinishing supplier for independent small refinishing businesses.

Miori was an innovator. It was this can-do spirit that connected him with NAPCO’s existing owner, Steve Coven, a NAPCO customer and professional refinisher. Like Mirori, Coven had a vision and knew that he could take NAPCO to the next level. In 1993, Coven purchased the company and set out on a path to improve the customer experience and deliver solutions that help refinishers succeed. One of his most notable achievements occurred in 2005 when Coven introduced NAPCO’s refinishing training program to the market. Today, Coven continues to move service and product development forward for the industry.

"While I didn't have any formal business training, I was passionate about refinishing and knew that small improvements to the business could make a huge difference," stated Steve Coven, CEO of NAPCO, Ltd. "When I became the owner of NAPCO, I set the business on a course to meet and rise above the challenges presented in the refinishing industry. Product improvement soon paved the way for coatings that cured faster and were lower in VOC content,” he added.

Continuous improvement and safety remain at the center of NAPCO’s research and product development focus. NAPCO’s leaders understood that a high-quality and safe product works best in skilled hands and therefore turned its attention to its training program. Continuing its commitment to innovation, in 2016 NAPCO added a full-time research and development paint chemist to its staff and a training professional with more than ten years' experience to enhance its hands-on, bathtub refinishing course. In 2018, NAPCO rose up to a new challenge and added kitchen refinishing to its training program. The company now boasts one of the most successful refinishing training programs in the nation. To date, NAPCO has trained over 1,000 refinishers globally, including trainees from the Canada and UK.
