Notes/Domino Report 2016: Application Modernization vs. Migration

(PRWEB) May 10, 2016 -- A recent survey conducted by SWING Software, a content transformation and archiving company, found that 93% of organizations which are using IBM Notes (Lotus Notes) and Domino have an action plan for Notes applications modernization or migration in 2016.

The survey shows that for most organizations, it’s no longer a question of whether to move from classic IBM Notes and Domino applications, but rather how to do it. SWING Software asked the IBM Notes (Lotus Notes) and Domino community what they were planning to do with their existing Notes and Domino applications and data. They wanted to know which of two paths prevailed – application modernization or migration to other platforms.

Here’s a summary of what was learned from 235 respondents:

  • 93% of respondents have an action plan for Notes applications and data, which includes modernization (36%), migration (32%) and a mix of the two (25%), while 7% have no plan in place.
  • Larger organizations tend to migrate to other platforms: 80% of 5,000+ employee organizations are migrating some or all of their Notes/Domino applications. They are also less interested in XPages and Domino modernization.
  • Most respondents are in the middle or early phases of the transition (75%), regardless of their organization size.
  • 43% of all respondents (and 53% of those who are migrating entirely or partially) would like to archive Notes application data outside of Notes/Domino. Larger organizations are more interested in platform-independent data retention due to compliance and legal requirements.
  • More than half of respondents said their organizations are not currently looking to migrate any of their Notes/Domino applications to the cloud. 36% will be migrating some of them.
  • Cloud providers: the plurality stays loyal to IBM; Microsoft comes in at a close second. IBM Bluemix might be a new home for Domino data.
  • Despite some bitter comments on IBM’s policy with Notes and Domino, former Lotus professionals are moving on. They are busy learning new skills and building a new generation of applications.
