ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Negative Population Growth, Inc. President Donald Mann noted he is pleased to see the White House put forth a plan to refashion America's current immigration policies by calling for a "merit-based" immigration system that would better serve America's future interests.
However, while endorsing the call to reform immigration laws that govern legal immigration, Mann emphasized the critical need to also severely cut the number of legal immigrants. He stated: "Without question our nation will be much better served in the long-term by following through on the White House proposals to replace the current visa lottery and chain-immigration rules, as well as fix the broken asylum system. However, without addressing the overall number of legal immigrants permitted to enter our country annually, we are simply feeding a future demographic crisis in which America will be overwhelmed by too many people."
Mann cited present U.S. Census Bureau predictions that forecast U.S. population to rise to 404 million people by 2060 – from today's 328 million. He stressed that such numbers are sure to result in economic, social, and environmental chaos. He added: "To stop immigration-driven population growth we must set a goal to accept no more than 200,000 legal immigrants per year, including all asylees, refugees, and other special immigrant classes."
Mann recognized that taking such austere steps would be a huge political hurdle, yet he underscored the fact that "The United States should feel no shame or guilt for these necessary steep reductions in immigration. Our nation has historically been the most generous receiver of immigrants in the world. Now it is time that we best serve our national interests so that we can leave our children and grandchildren a livable nation."
"The good news," said Mann, "is that national polls show the American people are very focused on the immigration issue and the vital need to put in place common sense, workable immigration policies. Never has it been more important for the White House and Congress to work together to change the composition of our immigration laws to make us a safer and stronger country – before the destructive open borders lobby gains more political clout to thwart any and all reforms. The best way to meet that goal is to start immediately to slow, halt, and eventually reverse America's population growth."
Founded in 1972, NPG is a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to educating the American public and political leaders regarding the damaging effects of population growth. We believe that our nation is already vastly overpopulated in terms of the long-range carrying capacity of its resources and environment. NPG advocates the adoption of its Proposed National Population Policy, with the goal of eventually stabilizing U.S. population at a sustainable level – far lower than today's.
