Construction Accident Lawyer Call for Investigation into Death of Construction Worker on Governor’s Island
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 10, 2013 -- A 55-year-old construction worker was killed by a 15-foot steel pipe on a Governor's Island job site. The pipe broke loose while Abbas Behnam-Bakhsh was unloading a flatbed truck reported NBC News (7.5.13). He was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the accident will answer the question: How can we prevent this from happening again, said construction accident lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm.
While many factors contribute to the risks associated with construction work, four types of accidents are reported by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as being the most deadly. One of these “fatal four” types of accidents is “struck by an object” which is what happened to Behnam-Bakhsh in the accident described by NBC News. The other three accident types are “falls,” “electrocutions” and “caught in or between.” Combined, these four types of work accidents accounted for nearly three out of every five deaths that occurred on construction sites in 2011.
“Negligence is often a factor contributing to fatal construction site accidents. However, the person who was killed is not always the negligent one. Oftentimes it’s another worker, a manager, a contractor, a manufacturer, a supplier, or some other third-party who was negligent,” said Perecman.
When a worker dies on the job there are usually a number of legal aspects that must be considered.
If the construction accident involved faulty equipment or negligence, the worker’s loved ones may be able to seek financial compensation for damages which may include medical expenses, lost wages, emotional suffering, and more. Third-party lawsuits are common in a number of workplace deaths.
