OPSWAT Report Looks at Devices with Advanced Threats
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 24, 2014 -- OPSWAT today announced the release of their quarterly market share report, which includes a new advanced threat detection section and leaders in the backup and peer-to-peer application market worldwide. The innovative advanced threats section includes in-depth analysis of the percentage of user devices with suspected advanced threats.
The latest market share report retrieves data by leveraging the advanced threat detection capabilities of GEARS. This cloud-based network security management solution provides two methods to identify suspected advanced threats on users’ devices. The first method identifies suspected advanced threats the existing antivirus software detects repeatedly, indicating that the antivirus is unable to remediate the threat or that the user is repeatedly downloading a malicious file. 1.6% of devices in OPSWAT’s report had an advanced threat identified through this method.
The second method utilizes OPSWAT’s multiple anti-malware engine cloud scanning technology, Metascan Online, to identify threats that may not have been detected by the installed antivirus software. GEARS uses a selection of 40 commercial anti-malware engines from Metascan Online to scan running processes on devices for malware. Using this method, 2.9% of devices in OPSWAT’s report had a suspected advanced threat detected. In total, OPSWAT’s report found that 4.5% of devices had a suspected advanced threat. OPSWAT’s report also highlights the leaders in the cloud backup market worldwide. The backup market was largely dominated by three products with DropBox, GoogleDrive and OneDrive (formerly Microsoft’s SkyDrive) making up nearly 80% of the combined market share. The report shows 40% of Windows devices had a cloud-backup application installed, which left a majority of devices without a cloud backup application installed.
Additional coverage in the report includes public file sharing or peer-to-peer application usage worldwide. uTorrent continues to hold a substantial lead, with more than half (62.4%) of the market share worldwide, with its parent company, BitTorrent, accounting for an additional 7.4%. The remaining peer-to-peer applications detected contained five percent or less market share worldwide.
