SOPS was established in 1956 as the first independent diagnostic oral pathology laboratory in the world. Scripps Oral Pathology Service has announced an 8-hour CE units course approved by the California Dental Board. The course will be held Saturday October 24, 2015.
Course Description – This is an 8 hour CE course designed to included lectures and interactive participant group discussion. The focus of this course is to expose general dentists, dental specialists and medical colleagues to a wide variety of head and neck conditions while focusing on the more commonly occurring disease processes that involve the oral cavity and craniofacial bones.
Course Objectives - at the completion of the course, participants should have a strong understanding of the principles of oral disease, oral cancer, and current trends in oral and maxillofacial pathology. The participant should understand the parameters of a thorough head and neck examination, identify potential disease and form a reasonable differential diagnosis based on the clinical findings. The participant should be able to contribute in the case management of the patient and enhance the delivery of appropriate primary oral health care.
In the United States, there will be an expected number of 45,000 new cases of oral cancer in 2015. The issue is that 63% of oral cancers are found in late stages (Stage III and IV). An estimation of 7,300 Americans will die next year of oral or oropharyngeal cancer. Dentists are the first line of defense against oral cancer, through the process of early discovery with thorough oral cancer screenings. Early detection and diagnosis saves lives.

Duane R. Schafer, DDS, MS – In 1997 Dr. Schafer completed his training in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Naval Postgraduate Dental School. Additionally he received his Masters Degree in Health Sciences from The George Washington University and was selected and completed a one-year Callender-Binford Fellowship in the Department of Otolaryngic and Endocrine Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
Christopher G. Fielding, DDS, MS – Dr. Fielding graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry and completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Fort Benning, GA. He completed postgraduate residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and earned a Masters degree in Oral Biology from The George Washington University.
Gretchen S. Folk, DDS, MS – Dr. Folk received her DDS from the University of Washington and completed her oral pathology residency at the Naval Dental School and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. She also received a MS degree in oral biology from the George Washington University. Gretchen served as Department Head of Anatomic Pathology at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Dr. Folk is a regular guest lecturer at Loma Linda University.
