Orbit Law, PLLC Partners Commemorate a Decade Each Practicing Law
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) October 17, 2017 -- Steve Tanijo and Kripa Upadhyay, managing partners of Orbit Law, PLLC, are each celebrating their tenth anniversaries as attorneys. The law partners graduated together from Seattle University School of Law in 2007 and merged their prior independent practices in 2015. All of the firm’s team members are either first-generation immigrants or children of immigrants. The firm, based in Seattle, WA, is able to provide services and assistance in English, Spanish, Nepali, Hindi and Urdu.
Since teaming up, they have helped employers recruit and retain the best and brightest; companies have not only been able to secure visas for their employees, but more importantly, have found a partner to help grow their business whilst helping them maintain compliance with ever changing rules and regulations around immigration and employment of foreign nationals. Local economies in various states have benefitted by establishment of businesses owned by foreign investors which then provide employment to locals in those communities, and most importantly, in the last 10 years, both partners have been successful in creating and growing a firm that is dedicated to not just helping Immigrants achieve the “American Dream,” but also advocating for and helping the larger community understand the benefits of immigration at all levels of society.
Today, their firm focuses on Immigration Law, Business Law and Employment Law, and both partners have received several recognitions for their work in immigration-related matters. The firm now has three attorneys and three paralegals, in addition to two of-counsel attorneys. Both partners are also frequent speakers in Continuing Legal Education Seminars. Tanijo mainly speaks on removal/deportation matters, and Upadhyay has spoken at local, regional and national Immigration Law conferences on a variety of employment and investor-based Immigration matters.
“Our personal lived experiences and history as first-generation immigrants or children of immigrants guides the ethos of the firm,” said Upadhyay, who was named a “Rising Star” for Immigration Law from 2014-2017, an honor given to only 2% of attorneys licensed to practice in any state, and was awarded the Washington State Bar Association’s Community Service Award in 2011 in recognition of her outstanding and exemplary service in helping immigrants and refugees in Washington State.
As pro-bono service is a cornerstone of the firm, in the past ten years, Kripa and Steve have helped change the lives of numerous people. One such case involved a client from Uruguay who had been backpacking through North America and doing volunteer work along the way. He was heading to Canada on the last day of his U.S. visa but ended up in a U.S. detention center instead due to overstaying his visa by just 30 minutes.
“I agreed to take the case on pro-bono and was eventually able to get the client released,” concluded Tanijo, who was born at the U.S. Base in Okinawa, Japan, to a U.S. citizen father (third-generation Japanese-Hawaiian), who was then serving active duty, and a Taiwanese mother. This case garnered national and international attention, including coverage in the LA Times.
The partners are ecstatic to be celebrating ten years of service to the communities in which they live and work, and look forward to continued growth in the coming years.
