They said we were crazy. They said our bowls were too big for our britches. They said the Madness would never catch on. Well, you know what, we’re here to tell you that you’re right. We are crazy — Crazy Delicious™. And yes, our bowls are big, in fact they are huge. But if you believe the Madness isn’t spreading, well, you must not be paying attention.
Teriyaki Madness, the Seattle-style Teriyaki Shop franchise system, is wrapping up the year at 37 new franchisees with 103 new units on tap as it continues to provide its amazing teriyaki bowls to a loyal and rabid fanbase. These openings helped the brand break into several new markets for the very first time, including Louisiana, Georgia, Missouri and Massachusetts. To put it another way: Teriyaki Madness saw a whopping 24% increase in open shops systemwide — growing its footprint by nearly a quarter..
“People keep talking about a recession? We say bring it on,” said Teriyaki Madness CEO Michael Haith. “We are closing out yet another groundbreaking year for our franchisees and it proves that the Madness can’t be stopped — we’ve built a business model designed to succeed in both good and bad economic times. Our New Year’s resolution? Exercise more. Our other resolution? Do it bigger and better all again next year!”
With an experienced, 50 staff team to support our 130 open Shop Owners, Teriyaki Madness invested even more in building bigger and even better for next year, by further adding to its experienced leadership team. TMAD couldn’t pass on the opportunity to bring on Ryann Frost, hired as Vice President of Real Estate Development; Beth Steeler, Director of Real Estate, promoted Joe Cohen from Vice President of Finance to CFO; Shanlee Kasson, recognized to VP of Ops Integrations; and Erin Hicks, was moved from COO to President so she could kick even some more butt!
“The demand for Teriyaki Madness is amazing, but expansion is not something we force — we are expanding our team with experienced, qualified leaders to ensure managed, aggressive, successful growth with our incredible community of franchisees,” said Haith. “As we say here in Colorado, we don’t want to get too far out over the tips of our skis!”
But wait, there’s more! TMAD stayed busy this year with several exciting initiatives both on the consumer and the franchisee front. For example, the brand collaborated with franchisees to foray into non-trad., with a food truck in Lapeer, Michigan, a casino TMAD location in Las Vegas as well as a robust catering program which grew catering sales by a whopping 208% year-over-year and the exciting nationwide adoption by several professional sports teams including the NFL 49ers, NHL Arizona Coyotes, MLB Pittsburgh Pirates and NHL Los Angeles Ducks who fed the demand of health-conscious professional athletes.
In order to bring as much expertise to bear for the franchisees, Bialow Real Estate, adds their efforts as a national real estate brokerage that Teriyaki Madness has signed to help franchisees find better locations faster. Sevan, a leader in innovative construction management will help franchisees build faster and achieve greater value.
All of this is in place to provide the 60 Teriyaki Madness Shops slated to open next year with the support necessary to get the TMAD community to just south of 200 teriyaki shops.
“Sometimes, the end of the year can feel like a real ‘kick in the bowls’ if you haven’t achieved what you set out to at the start of the year, but we are proud to say we are keeping the momentum going strong as one of the fastest-growing franchises in the U.S.,” said Haith. “Despite the obvious challenges of Covid, supply chain, stopping inflation that everyone experienced over the last few years, Teriyaki Madness has continued to thrive due to its simple, proven and successful business model, in-depth franchisee support and expert leadership team. We are excited to keep that momentum going for years to come!”
