Air fryers are a must-have kitchen appliance. Sales of air fryers increased by 76% over the last two years compared to the previous 24-month period, with 25.6 million units sold from January 2020 through December 2021, reports The NPD Group.

"The popularity of air fryers offers opportunities for manufacturers, like upgrading existing owners with an innovative feature or function, enticing new buyers, or developing a multi-function appliance used for a variety of occasions," says Joe Derochowski, home industry advisor, The NPD Group.

Air fryers, essentially portable convection ovens, have become a must-have cooking appliance in America, reports The NPD Group. Sales of air fryers increased by 76% over the last two years compared to the previous 24-month period, with 25.6 million units sold from January 2020 through December 2021, according to NPD's continual tracking of home industry retail sales. And, more than just countertop décor, consumers put them to use regularly. NPD's National Eating Trends® finds that air fryer use has increased by more than 60% at dinner occasions during the past two years.

With over 80% of meals prepared at home since the beginning of the pandemic, consumers are looking for appliances that make their food prep easier and faster, and for many, air fryers are the answer. Versatility is another reason that air fryers are popular. Air fryers create crispy, chewy foods with a small amount of oil, bake cakes, and roast chicken. Users are continually looking for recipes to take full advantage of the appliance's functionality. Air fryer cookbook sales reached 971 million units in 2021, up 11% over the prior year, outpacing total cookbook category performance, according to NPD BookScan. The bestselling air fryer cookbook in 2021 was "Air Fryer Cookbook: 600 Effortless Air Fryer Recipes for Beginners and Advanced Users" by Jenson William.

"Air fryers were selling before the pandemic, and sales accelerated during it," says Joe Derochowski, NPD Home industry analyst. "The popularity of air fryers offers opportunities for manufacturers, like upgrading existing owners with an innovative feature or function, enticing new buyers, or developing a multi-function appliance used for a variety of occasions."
