The Pacific Hospital Preservation & Development Authority (PHPDA) has announced the rebrand of its grants program as the "Health Equity Fund" in order to better communicate the fund's principles and priorities. The grant-making program, which began in 2013, has provided more than $20 million in funding for projects and programs to support health access and reduce health disparities in King County.
"The Health Equity Fund is the same program our grantees already know, but with a new name that communicates what the fund aims to accomplish," says PHPDA Executive Director Jeff Natter. "We will continue to partner with our grantees in order to create innovative solutions required to meet the needs of our community."
PHPDA began its grants program to address the healthcare needs of communities going unmet by the current healthcare system. As the Health Equity Fund, the PHPDA program will continue its focus on underserved populations and work to address the issues of systemic structural and institutional racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, income inequality, and other forms of discrimination that negatively impact healthcare delivery and outcomes.
"What makes PHPDA funding different than any other funding is that it allows organizations working for social justice to be innovative," says Raleigh Watts, Executive Director of Country Doctor Community Health Centers. "Changing structures and organizations to bring equity in our communities involves new programs, new approaches, and new ideas. 'Health Equity Fund' is a perfect name for the work PHPDA does because it speaks to investing in change."
"The PHPDA is passionate about funding initiatives which serve those whose health needs are not met by currently available resources," says Tony McLean, PHPDA Governing Council Chair. "We believe that a healthy community will lead to a more vibrant community. Our new name, Health Equity Fund, shines a bright light on our commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to opportunities to manage their health effectively."
The Health Equity Fund's Major Grant application deadline has passed, and 2019 funding recipients will be announced in June. Organizations may apply at any time for Nimble Grant opportunities for short-term projects, infrastructure/capacity development, planning, technology improvement, training, or policy and advocacy work.
