PAINWeek to Feature NADDI Drug Diversion Track
Montclair, NJ (PRWEB) August 12, 2013 -- PAINWeek, the National Conference on Pain for Frontline Practitioners, today announced that the National Association of drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) will return for the 4th consecutive year with an all-new program of instruction on pharmaceutical drug diversion and recent legal/regulatory initiatives to combat the problem.
The program track, to be offered on the second day of the conference, Thursday September 5, is comprised of 4 courses designed to brief and prepare pain practitioners on the complex and fast moving environment surrounding this important topic. NADDI President John J. Burke will open the program with “Protecting your Medical Practice: A Law Enforcement Perspective.” This lecture involves common sense methods derived from a law enforcement perspective that practitioners can employ to deter drug seekers, or to identify them when they attempt to invade their medical practices. Charles F. Cichon, Executive Director of NADDI will follow with his course, “Pill Mills and Pain Management: Legislation and Enforcement.” New legislation and awareness has changed the landscape of treating chronic pain patients with opioids. Legitimate prescribers must find the appropriate balance between ensuring optimal care for their patients with pain, while minimizing abuse and diversion. The presentation will examine Florida “Pill Mill” legislation and its effect on Ohio, Kentucky, and Washington states. Commander Burke returns to the lectern with “Drug Diversion vs Pain Management—Finding a Balance.” The course will offer a look at current drug diversion issues that include the top prescription drugs of abuse, and the scams that practitioners should guard against. Examples of several real criminal cases are highlighted to illustrate typical problems. NADDI Vice President Lisa M. McElhaney, will conclude the program with “Bullying in Medicine: Are You the Victim or the Perpetrator?” The increase of litigation in the healthcare industry has brought significant attention to issues of workplace safety and the behaviors of medical professionals. Bullying contributes to large scale deficiencies in performance and productivity in the healthcare workplace, whether healthcare professionals are on the contributing or the receiving end of the mistreatment.
