In June of this year, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster participated in a ceremonial signing of 9 new bills intended to combat the crisis of opioid misuse and abuse in the state. The action followed on McMaster's December 2017 declaration of a public health emergency tasking the Opioid Emergency Response Team with developing a comprehensive response plan. Among other provisions, the new legislation establishes a 7-day limit on initial opioid prescriptions for acute or post-operative pain and directs the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to develop prescription report cards for practitioners. At PAINWeekEnd Charleston, Abigail Brooks, PharmD, BCPS, will be presenting Walking the Line: Opioid Dose De-Escalation, a discussion of different patient situations in which tapering or discontinuance of opioids may be appropriate.
