PAINWeekEnd in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Offers CE/CME Education to Address the Opioid Abuse Public Health Crisis
A Full Day of Pain Management for the Main Street Practitioner on December 1; mingle with faculty and attendees, learn and earn up to 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 credits for $129.
MONTCLAIR, N.J., Nov. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on Saturday, December 1 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Pittsburgh Downtown, 1 Bigelow Square, in Pennsylvania, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.
The Pennsylvania State Legislature is actively engaged in the issue of opioid abuse in the state, with 17 new bills introduced in the most recent legislative session. While physician groups including the Pennsylvania Medical Society have supported various measures to expand the state's PDMP, create voluntary guidelines for prescribers, and expand physician education, they have also opposed recent proposals by the legislature to make prescribing guidelines mandatory, citing the need for patient-specific decisions made by individual clinicians. In light of this changing legislative and regulatory arena, the curriculum to be presented at PAINWeekEnd Pittsburgh will equip participants with knowledge and skills to better negotiate the prescribing landscape while meeting the needs of their patients with pain. Jessica Geiger-Hayes, PharmD, BCPS, CPE, will present an examination of the role of antispasmodics in the management of various pain syndromes, from muscle spasms, cramping, and hiccups. Her course, Relax, All Antispasmodics are the Same…Right? makes the point that antispasmodics are not a one-size-fits-all approach and clinicians can customize their patient's care by matching the symptom to the appropriate medication. "The aim of this session is to provide a high-level review of the different classes and types of antispasmodics," Dr. Geiger-Hayes remarked. "Participants will gain a better understanding of the appropriate place of antispasmodics in therapy—and be more confident in choosing one." She will also be presenting The 411 on Nonprescription Analgesics.
Other course topics to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Pittsburgh include Evidence-Based Approaches to Chronic Pain Management; The Regulatory Agency Will See You Now; Reefer Madness Revisited; and The Other Opioid Crisis: Fentanyl and Heroin.
Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.
