MONTCLAIR, N.J., Sept. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PAINWeekEnd on September 28 at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor, 300 Light Street, will be a timely program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Maryland is among the top five states in the nation in the rate of opioid related overdose deaths. The state launched a web portal called "Before It's Too Late," a collection of resources to address the escalating incidence of misuse and abuse of illicit substances and prescription opioids. Governor Larry Hogan signed new legislation to enhance information sharing and response to overdose events, and to expand the state's volume dealer statute to include fentanyl and its analogs. The curriculum to be presented at PAINWeekEnd Baltimore will equip participants with knowledge and skills to better negotiate the changing regulatory landscape for prescribers while meeting the needs of their patients with pain. Senior PAINWeek faculty member Kevin Zacharoff, MD, FACPE, FACIP, FAAP, has lectured widely on the impact of expanding regulatory oversight on the practice of pain management, particularly with respect to the interests of the most important stakeholder: the patient. At PAINWeekEnd Baltimore, Dr. Zacharoff will present The Regulatory Agency Will See You Now about which he commented, "This course will present and detail the variety of current regulatory forces that need to be considered in clinical practice; how they can potentially impact clinical decisions regarding chronic pain; and how they can be negotiated." Dr. Zacharoff will also lead an examination of the role of illicit substances in the overdose epidemic in his course The Other Opioid Crisis: Heroin and Fentanyl.
As regulatory efforts continue to steer patients and practitioners away from opioid therapy for pain, there has been a corresponding increase in interest in other treatment modalities, including nonprescription analgesics. At PAINWeekEnd Baltimore, Alexandra McPherson, PharmD, MPH, will present her course The 411 on Nonprescription Analgesics: When to Hold 'Em, When to Fold 'Em: "Patients frequently opt to use a nonprescription analgesic to self-treat a painful complaint, yet often do not have all the facts, such as potential exclusions to self-treatment or how to select the best analgesic from a sea of countless options," commented Dr. McPherson. "In this session, we'll investigate the mechanism of action, indications, adverse effects, and precautions of oral and topical nonprescription analgesics, along with key patient counseling points when recommending a nonprescription analgesic." Dr. McPherson will also present 3's Company: COX-2 Inhibitors, Medicinal Marijuana, and Opioid Prescribing.
Other courses to be offered at PAINWeekEnd include Chronic Pain Assessment and Precise Prescribing: Applying the Science of Pain to Treatment Decisions. Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.
