Majority of respondents agree that legal parental access to minors' accounts and passwords would reduce safety concerns such as sexual assault and bullying
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PasswordManager.com, a dedicated resource for password security and internet safety, has published a recent survey report that examines attitudes toward legal measures granting parents access to their children's passwords and accounts. The study also shares insight into the potential consequences of these measures. The survey garnered responses from 1,000 adults in the United States.
Based on the report, 66 percent of survey respondents 'strongly agree' or 'agree' that parents should have a legal right to access some or all of their children's internet accounts. Of this group, 97 percent say they should be able to legally obtain passwords for 'social media,' and 80 percent say 'texting apps.' Likewise, 74 percent of respondents 'strongly agree' or 'agree' that internet technology companies should be legally required to obtain parental consent before allowing minors to sign up for their services. Of this group, 96 percent say social media companies should be required to obtain parental permission, and 79 percent say community apps such as Reddit.
Survey results also show that 78 percent 'strongly agree' or 'agree' legal parental access to minors' passwords will make them safer. With regards to the issues concerning the safety of minors, the majority of respondents believe that giving parents access to their children's passwords may prevent problems such as sexual assault, bullying, self-harm, poor mental health, school violence, substance abuse, negative body image, and invasion of privacy.
This survey was commissioned by PasswordManager.com and conducted online by the survey platform Pollfish from May 25 to 27, 2023. In total, 1,000 participants in the United States completed the full survey. All participants met demographic criteria to ensure they were age 18 or older. Six hundred and ten respondents identified themselves as parents, while 390 did not.
