Among job seekers who have encountered these scams, 84 percent applied and/or interviewed for the job
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 19, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- PasswordManager.com, a dedicated resource for password security and internet safety, has published a recent survey report that evaluates the pervasiveness of fake job scams. The report also shares insight into the negative outcomes of these scams. PasswordManager.com researchers analyzed responses from 663 Americans who have searched for a job within the past two years.
Survey results show that 38 percent of recent job seekers have encountered scam job postings. Among this group, 47 percent say they encountered these fake job scams on Craigslist, followed by 44 percent on Indeed, and 44 percent on Facebook Marketplace. Furthermore, the most commonly-reported job industries with these fake job scams include retail, healthcare and service.
Of the 38 percent of respondents who report encountering fake job scams, 84 percent say they applied and/or interviewed for a job without knowing it was a scam. Many of these scam jobs impersonated major corporations, with the most commonly-reported ones being Amazon, Walmart, UPS, and FedEx. As a result of engaging with scam job postings, 8 percent say 'banking info was stolen,' 12 percent say 'SSN was stolen,' 12 percent say 'sent money to scammers,' and 33 percent say 'other PI was stolen.'
This online poll was commissioned by PasswordManager.com and conducted by SurveyMonkey on June 8, 2023. Respondents consist of a national sample of 663 Americans age 18 and older. Respondents went through a primary screening to ensure they have engaged in a job search within the last two years, and a secondary screening to ask if they have encountered scam job postings. Two hundred and fifty respondents completed the full survey with an incidence rate of 38 percent.
