PasswordManager.com Survey Reveals 2 in 3 Netflix Subscribers Will Continue Subscription Despite Password Crackdown

As Netflix implements new password-sharing policy, users are likely to continue paying for the streaming service while “mooches” would consider purchasing their own subscription

66 percent of current subscribers are ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ likely to continue paying for a Netflix account even if they will no longer be able to share it with those outside their household.

PasswordManager.com, a dedicated resource for password security and internet safety, has published a recent survey report that explores sentiment surrounding the end of password sharing on Netflix. The study also shares insight into the popularity and importance of the streaming platform. The research generated responses from 1,250 Netflix users who share an account with people outside their households.

Based on survey results, 3 in 4 respondents were aware of Netflix’s new password-sharing policy, which will prevent subscribers from sharing their account with people outside their household. Fifty-nine percent of respondents say this policy is ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ unfair. Despite this view, 66 percent of current subscribers are ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ likely to continue paying for a Netflix account even if they will no longer be able to share it with those outside their household.

Of the total 1,250 respondents, 49 percent say they pay for their own Netflix subscription, and 27 percent say they share the cost with one or more people. Among the group that splits the cost, 68 percent say they share the account with someone who lives outside of their household, which will not be possible once Netflix implements the new policy. Of this group, 68 percent ‘somewhat’ or ‘strongly’ agree that a Netflix subscription is too expensive to afford on their own.

Among the 1 in 4 respondents who use another person’s Netflix account and do not pay, two-thirds say that the primary account holder lives outside their household. Of these “mooches,” 1 in 2 say they are ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ likely to pay for their own subscription. Despite their new policy, Netflix proves to be a platform that many are willing to pay for. When respondents were asked how likely they would be to pay for other streaming services–such as Disney Plus, Hulu and HBO Max–if they adopted a similar password-sharing policy, respondents were more willing to pay for Netflix than any other platform.

This survey was commissioned by PasswordManager.com and conducted online via the survey platform Pollfish on February 15, 2023. Overall, 1,250 Netflix users in the United States were surveyed. All participants were screened to ensure that they share a Netflix account with people outside their household. The survey used a convenience sampling method and Random Device Engagement to avoid bias.
