PD Consultants UK Applauds Rebecca Adlington’s Mentoring Spirit
(PRWEB UK) 17 February 2014 -- Adlington is easily Britain’s most accomplished swimmer. She won two gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and two bronze in the 2012 London games. Her accomplishments in Beijing made her the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal in watersports in 48 years. At the ripe old age of 24, she retired from the sport in 2013 and has decided in the true spirit of mentoring that she could be a valuable resource to the “next generation of medalists”. “I know how easy it can be within a sport to feel on your own,” Adlington told the BBC. Part of mentoring is to help those who are developing skills that they are not alone and that they are supported by a knowledgeable and experienced other. “Having the opportunity to talk through issues or concerns with someone outside of your usual support network can really help, which is one of the main aims of the programme.”
Adlington is certainly a busy person who became engaged a year ago and is involved in anti-malaria charity work as well as promoting swimming through the UK as the British Gas swimming ambassador. She is also involved in trying to prevent widespread public pool closures throughout England when she can. She has established the “Rebecca Adlington SwimStars” initiative with the goal of having each child in the UK to be able to swim 25 meters by the time they leave primary school. Yet, in spite of these time-consuming commitments, she generously gives six up-and-coming competitive swimmers the benefits of her experience.
“One of the marks of a mentor is the generous giving of himself or herself,” commented Kieran Elliott of PD Consultants UK. “A mentor of merit has only one goal: to pass on the gifts given to him or her from others and from experience. It’s a classic paying forward. It’s a way of replicating one’s valuable experience by sharing it with others. It’s a very generous act of giving.”
Her mentees are six athletes chosen form the World Class Swimming Programme. They include Sophie Taylor from the City of Leeds, Jess Fullalove from the City of Manchester, Harriet Cooper from the City of Derby, Lauren Quigley from Stockport Metro, Adam Peaty also from Derby, and Ross Murdock from the University of the Stirling. By taking these under her wing, Adlington assists them in taking a few steps closer to their athletic victories.
