Phoenix Pedestrian Accident Attorney Kyle A. Israel Comments on Phoenix, Tucson Pedestrian Fatality Rates
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) October 02, 2014 -- Commenting on a recent study ranking Phoenix and Tucson among the top 25 most deadly cities for pedestrians, Phoenix pedestrian accident lawyer Kyle A. Israel of Israel & Gerity, PLLC said it’s critical for drivers and pedestrians alike to be aware of their surroundings at all times and safely share the road with one another.
Israel, a Phoenix attorney with two decades’ experience, based his comments on a Tucson Sentinel article detailing the findings of a Governing magazine study. The article, “Tucson, Phoenix metros among top 25 for pedestrian death rate,” was published August 6 and reported significantly higher pedestrian fatality rates in Tucson and Phoenix when compared to the national average.
“Drivers and pedestrians have a responsibility to share the road with one another,” Israel said. “Unfortunately, pedestrians and cyclists are injured and killed far too often in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale and Tucson. This recent study indicates there is much room for improvement, from increasing the amount of warning signs on our roads to reminding Arizona’s drivers about safe driving habits, especially in densely populated neighborhoods.”
According to the article, the study ranked Tucson 24th and Phoenix 18th among large cities for pedestrian fatality rates between 2008 and 2012. The study also found fatality rates to be up to four times higher than the national average in low-income neighborhoods where residents may not have access to motor vehicles and travel on foot or by bicycle.
The Tucson Sentinel article reported that the five-year rate in Tucson for pedestrians and cyclists was 9.7 per 100,000 residents and 8.7 per 100,000 residents in Phoenix. While both communities are making efforts to install traffic signals, flashing LEDs and warning signs for drivers, more efforts must be made to improve pedestrian safety in both cities, according to the Sentinel.
“Unfortunately, many pedestrian accidents are preventable. Often, a pedestrian or bicyclist may be lawfully crossing an intersection when they’re struck by a drunk or distracted driver,” Israel said. “Drivers who make careless or reckless decisions that result in injury or death must be held accountable. Injured pedestrians and cyclists need to be compensated for their injuries. Attorneys can fight to protect their rights so they can get the compensation they need to get their lives back on track.”
