EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., March 15, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Peirce Island wastewater treatment plant in Portsmouth, NH underwent an extensive expansion and upgrade, with Penetron crystalline products used as a waterproofing solution for the large concrete structures. Designed by AECOM, the upgraded facility now provides secondary treatment and nitrogen removal, meeting strict federal environmental standards. The project contractor, Methuen Construction, added new buildings, including a biologically aerated/anoxic (BAF) filter building, a headworks building, and a solids building.
The upgraded Peirce Island WWTP now handles a daily flow of up to 6.1 million gallons of wastewater, discharged to the Piscataqua River through a 24 inch diameter single port outfall. To better protect local water quality, AECOM specified Penetron products for the new concrete structures, including the BAF building with walls measuring about 40 feet tall and over 200 feet in length. Crews also waterproofed tank walls of the WWTP with PENETRON , a topically applied crystalline material.
Penetron products, such as PENETRON ADMIX, were added to the concrete mix used for the BAF building walls and foundation. This fills micro-cracks, pores, and capillaries with an insoluble crystalline formation, preventing water and water-borne chemicals from entering the concrete structures, even under high hydrostatic pressure. The self-healing abilities of PENETRON also waterproof any cracks that develop during the lifetime of the concrete, resulting in durable and waterproof concrete for the lifespan of the structure.
The use of Penetron crystalline technology provides the upgraded Peirce Island facility with increased treatment capacity, cleaner effluent, and decreased maintenance requirements. The new plant's improved capabilities to remove nitrogen from wastewater and treat previously untreated stormwater run-off are essential for protecting the quality of the Piscataqua River, which receives the treated effluent from the plant.
