PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline concrete waterproofing admixture, was specified to protect the new concrete structures from the aggressive environment due to the effluent and the high groundwater levels of the construction site.
Sunriver is a 3,300 acre (13 km2) planned residential and resort community with almost 2,200 inhabitants. Located about 15 miles (25 km) south of Bend, Oregon, at the base of the Cascade Mountains, the development consists of single-family homes, community common areas, recreational facilities, The Village at Sunriver, an open-air mall, and the Sunriver Resort, which comprises a hotel, banquet facility, a restaurant; four golf courses complete the resort.
Originally built in 1974, the Sunriver wastewater treatment plant was unable to keep up with the community's steady and robust growth; the facility needed to expand treatment capacity and meet recent, more stringent water quality requirements. The recently completed construction project added a new wastewater treatment plant with odor reduction systems and covered treatment tanks. The new plant serves not only Sunriver, but the communities of Caldera Springs, Crosswater, and Vandevert Ranch as well.
"During the planning phase of the Sunriver project, Parametrix, the engineering and planning consultant company, looked to a competitive product as a concrete waterproofing solution," explains Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. Concrete structures in a wastewater treatment plant are continually exposed to chlorides, sulfates, nitrates, disinfectants, and an array of corrosive compounds and various chemicals added during the plant's treatment processes. Added to the concrete mix in pre-measured soluble bags to simplify the batching process, PENETRON ADMIX SB reduces concrete permeability, increases chemical resistance, and enables the self-sealing of any new or future hairline cracks.
Hooker Creek, the ready-mix concrete supplier, delivered around 1,300 yds3 (1,000 m3) of PENETRON ADMIX SB to Slaydon Construction, the general contractor, for the headworks, sludge tanks, clarifier tanks, and pump stations.
