The Penetron System was implemented to ensure the durability of the new and repaired concrete structures in the demanding equatorial climate.
First opened in 1978, the Estádio Estadual Jornalista Edgar Augusto Proença (State Stadium Edgar Augusto Proença), also known as "Mangueirão," is a football stadium with a seating capacity of 45,007 spectators located in Belém, in the northern Brazilian state of Pará, in the Amazon region. An initial refurbishment of the facility in 2002 added missing seats and a running track to the field.
"After more than 40 years since its inauguration, the Mangueirão stadium finally underwent a thorough renovation last year," adds Cláudio Neves Ourives, CEO and Managing Partner of Penetron Brazil. "From the outside, the architectural design remained the same. However, the increase in capacity and modernization of the facility infrastructure has resulted in a whole new stadium."
In addition to general renovation of the paintwork, the restrooms, and hospitality areas, replacement of the seats, new grass and running track, and expansion of the entrance and crowd areas, extensive repair work on the concrete superstructure was also needed.
"The Penetron System was implemented for much of the concrete repairs," adds Cláudio Neves Ourives. "The Penetron Brazil team was on-site to ensure the concrete repair work on the Mangueirão was carried out correctly."
Initially, PENETRON INJECT, a crystalline-based two-component injection grout with integral waterproofing capabilities, was injected to fill hollow spots and seal deeply embedded voids and add stability and strength to repaired areas.
"There were regions with large 'pinholes' near the concrete joints in the columns of the stadium grandstands, which were identified by ultrasound. The only way to effectively repair these damaged areas was by injecting PENETRON INJECT, which has low viscosity, high fluidity, mechanical resistance, and provides self healing capability to the concrete," explains Cláudio Neves Ourives.
Next, a topical application of PENETRON, a cementitious integral crystalline waterproofing slurry, was completed on the underside of the grandstand structures, over the passageway, and on all exposed concrete surfaces. Once applied, the active ingredients in PENETRON created a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. This enhances the impermeability and restores the passivating alkalinity of the structural concrete.
"Once the reinforcement of the concrete structures and final protection of all exposed surfaces was carried out and properly cured, our work was done," concludes Cláudio Neves Ourives. "Today, the Mangueirão meets all CBF* and CONMEBOL** standards – and has room for up to almost 54,000 spectators. It looks great!"
