RSS, a new gravesite records website, was made available to the public today. The site maintains more than 130 million new cemetery records with extensive details on burials and final dispositions. It was carefully designed to both expand access to millions of new records and simplify the discovery process for family history, genealogy and ancestry research.

The current dataset of burial records and memorials is already one of the largest collections with free and open-access on the Web. It includes every available public and national cemetery record, plus dozens of non-traditional historical sources. The records consist of birth dates, death certificates, pictures of grave stones, official obituaries, final resting locations, and includes links to full parent records, spouses, siblings, children and other family relative listings whenever possible. Many memorials include details of military service, religious affiliations, photos of the deceased, obituaries from the local newspaper at the time of death and other images of relevant documents.

The goal of People Legacy is to make it easier for beginners to get started in genealogy research. Future developments will make it possible for users to organize all their ancestral records and genealogical information in one place. Over the next few months, the site is scheduled to incorporate new data sources, add new features such as the creation of family trees, and implement a communications platform that allows relatives to connect and submit their own information, comments or memorial messages.

Users can conduct a search using a specific person’s full name, last name only - to find all relatives, or browse all cemeteries by their state or county. This broad approach makes it easy to find distant relatives when the exact spelling of a name may have changed or exact dates are not known.
